Umbrian Villages - Ficulle

Visiting and living Ficulle. Between history, nature and relax

In this article you will find important and useful information if you are planning to visit Ficulle or would like to move there. Ficulle is a peaceful Umbria village with very ancient origins, surrounded by unspoilt nature.

Where is Ficulle located?

Ficulle is a municipality with approximately 1600 inhabitants, located in western part of Umbria, at a short distance from the border with Tuscany and Latium. The village enjoys an exceptional location overlooking the surrounding countryside, at 20 km from Orvieto, an hours’ drive from cities such as Terni and Perugia, and less than two hours from Rome and Florence.

So not only is the village immersed in a peaceful natural setting with splendid views towards Mount Peglia, the services, railway connections and motorway are also conveniently close.

What is there to do and to see in Ficulle?

Ficulle’s historical centre is typical of fortified Medieval villages, with small alleys enclosed by the old town walls, two fortresses defending the town and the oldest centre of Castel Maggiore. In fact, Ficulle for a very long time was an important outpost for the protection of the City of Orvieto, an importance which is still perceivable today.

The Castle is located in the heart of the town and the views are absolutely breath-taking. It was recently restored and can be visited. Other absolute must-sees are the Churches of S. Maria Nuova and S. Maria Vecchia as well as the seventeenth-century Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. Just outside the town, we also find magical places such as “Il Conventaccio”, a fortified structure dating back to the Middle Ages which has beautiful views on Orvieto, but also Castello della Sala, a twelfth-century construction, nowadays owned by the prestigious winery Antinori, who produces excellent wines with the same name.

The origins of the name Ficulle are uncertain. The most agreed-upon theory connects the origin of the name to the Latin term “figulus”, that is a potter. In fact, pottery is one of the ancient handcrafts of the town which also boasts a typical “Ficullese earthenware” with two characteristic colours: manganese brown and copper green.

Of course, Ficulle, like many other Umbrian towns, boasts a number of traditional dishes and local products: one absolutely worth mentioning is the “Groppone di Ficulle”, a typical type of cured meat made with Cinta Senese pork meat.

Life in Ficulle

Even though Ficulle is not big, it has all the necessary services for everyday life and it won’t be necessary to go far to find what you need. The bank, the pharmacy, household shops, supermarkets, restaurants and tourist accommodations are everywhere in the town and just outside it. In the historical centre, in Via Castel Maggiore, you will find the Town Hall, the Library and close by the local command of the Carabinieri.

If you are just passing through, there is a camper area and there are public toilets.
